Description

A ginger extraction plant is designed to extract active phytochemicals from ginger rhizomes for use in nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and food applications. Below is the detailed process:

Extraction Process
  • Raw Material Sourcing: Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is cultivated in suitable tropical climates. The quality of extract depends on the soil conditions, variety of ginger, and agronomic practices.
  • Harvesting: Once matured, the ginger rhizomes are harvested carefully to avoid physical damage. Harvest time plays a crucial role in determining the concentration of active constituents like gingerols and shogaols.
  • Cleaning & Preparation: Harvested rhizomes are thoroughly washed to remove soil and debris. They are sliced or chopped to increase surface area, enabling better solvent penetration during extraction.
  • Drying: Prepared ginger pieces are dried using tray dryers or solar dryers at controlled temperatures to preserve bioactives and remove moisture.
  • Pulverization: The dried ginger is ground into coarse or fine powder depending on the required mesh size for extraction efficiency.
  • Filtration & Concentration:: The extract solution is filtered to remove coarse particles and concentrated under reduced pressure using evaporators to obtain a thick extract.
  • Standardization: The extract is standardized to ensure consistent levels of actives like Gingerol (typically 5% or 10%), using HPLC or spectrophotometric analysis.
  • Packaging & Storage: The final product is packed in food-grade containers or drums. It is stored in a cool, dry place, away from light and heat to maintain potency.
  • By-Product Utilization: Residual biomass may be used for composting or cattle feed, ensuring a sustainable and zero-waste process.
  • Quality Control: Microbial safety, Heavy metals, Active compound levels, Solvent residue (if applicable).

  • Allicin – Primary active compound, known for antibacterial, antiviral, and cardioprotective properties.
  • Alliin – Precursor to allicin; more stable in powder forms.
